Governing Board Roles and Responsibilities

The Persistence Preparatory Academy Governing Board will assist in building an excellent charter school that is singularly focused on carrying out its mission to educate all K-8 scholars for academic and life success, with a focus on college preparation for all scholars regardless of demographic background.

Governing Board members must share a commitment to this mission and to the vision of an academically rigorous, disciplined, public charter school serving the traditionally under-served students of Buffalo. They must be dedicated, passionate, and entrepreneurial individuals willing to volunteer their expertise, connections, and time to ensure the ultimate success of Persistence Prep in fulfilling its mission.

The Governing Board will consist of 7-12 members. Governing Board members are expected to serve a minimum of one, three-year term, with hopes of trustees serving a minimum of six years (two consecutive, three-year terms).  

Responsibilities of the Governing Board

  • Assist in the design of business and facilities plans to prepare the school for sound fiscal health
  • Help cultivate community support and galvanize a network of strategic partnerships
  • Develop and perpetuate a Board to govern the school and be accountable for the school’s success
  • Provide financial guidance and oversight to ensure sound financial management

Performance Expectations of Individual Governing Board Members

  • Assist in the design of business and facilities plans to prepare the school for sound fiscal health
  • Help cultivate community support and galvanize a network of strategic partnerships
  • Develop and perpetuate a Board to govern the school and be accountable for the school’s success
  • Provide financial guidance and oversight to ensure sound financial management

Qualifications of Governing Board Members

  • Belief in charter schools and in the mission of Persistence Preparatory Academy
  • Belief that all children can achieve the highest levels of academic excellence
  • Availability to participate meaningfully in the Governing process
  • Expertise in law, real estate, financial management, governance, marketing, fundraising, advocacy, community organizing /outreach, education, or strategic planning
  • Personal experience with entrepreneurship and/or working on diverse teams
  • Willingness to use personal and professional networks on behalf of the school
  • Commitment to improving the quality of education for children in low-income communities within Buffalo

Monthly Time Commitment/Expectations

  • Active participation in 90-minute Board of Trustees Meeting
  • Active participation in monthly committee meetings (on average, each Trustee sits on 1 committee/task forces)
  • Document review in preparation for committee and full board meetings (approx. 30 minutes)
  • Participation in various school and community events
